- 29,000 acres were designated as a Geological Area in 1974.
- It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1976.
- 37,000 acres were designated in 2003 as a National Archaeological District.
- 12,600 acres were designated as The Clifty Wilderness Area.
- It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- It contains the largest concentrations of natural arches in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains with over 100 arches.
- It is one of the most biologically diverse temperate forests in the WORLD with over 555 species of plants in 100 families and 304 genera.
- Trees that grow in the Gorge include: Beech, Sugar Maple, White Pine, Hemlock, Several types of Oak and Hickory, Walnut, Big Leaf Magnolia, Sycamore, Tulip Poplar and many more.
- It provides a home to over 67 different species of amphibian and reptile, 46 species of mammal, and over 100 species of bird.
- It is home to several species of plant and animal not found anywhere but in the RRG including the White Haired Goldenrod.
- It is also home to many more threatened and endangered species of plant and animal including Virginia Big Eared Bat.
- It is only one of about five locations on Earth where evidence has been found of prehistoric plant domestication by humans.
- Attracts up to 500,000 visitors annually
- It contains over 1,200 Rock Climbing Routes and over 60 miles of Hiking Trail.
- 19.4 miles of The Red River was designated in 1993 as Kentucky's first and only Wild and Scenic River.
- The 46 mile Red River Gorge National Scenic Byway was designated in 2002, and is one of only three in the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky.
- 95% of Kentucky's indigenous plant and animal species can be found in the Gorge.
